Age and Consent Rules

  • Tattoo: 18+ absolute (criminal offence under Tattooing of Minors Act 1969).
  • Piercing: consent allowed, written consent + accompaniment.
  • Intimate piercing: 18+ only.
  • Scotland: Tattooing anyone under 18 is a criminal offence under the Tattooing of Minors Act 1969. Piercing under 16 requires written consent and parent/guardian accompaniment (SSI 2006/43).

Licensing Requirements

  • Practitioner registration required (Personal Licence Number).
  • Periodic renewal required.
  • Scotland: Licence required under the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982. Both personal and premises licences needed. ICO registration mandatory.

Sterilisation and Record-Keeping

  • Sterilisation records required.
  • Retention period: 24 months.
  • Scotland requires autoclave sterilisation records to be maintained for a minimum of 24 months.
