Compliance Requirements

Age and Consent Rules

  • Tattoo: consent allowed (age 16+), notarized consent + parent present.
  • Piercing: consent allowed, notarized consent + parent present.
  • Intimate piercing: 18+ only.
  • Florida: Parental consent for minors must be notarised (tattoo and piercing). Parent/guardian must be present for tattoo (all ages 16-17) and piercing (under 16). Both minor and parent/guardian must provide government-issued photo ID for tattoo.

Licensing Requirements

  • Practitioner licence required (Tattoo Artist / Body Piercer License).
  • FL: Artist licensure under F.S. §381.00775; establishment licensure under F.S. §381.00777. Both administered by FDOH via county health depts under F.A.C. Ch. 64E-28. Annual renewal.

Sterilisation and Record-Keeping

  • Sterilization records required.
  • Retention period: 24 months.
  • FL: Autoclave with chemical indicator each load. Spore testing every 40 hours of operation or quarterly (whichever first). Annual servicing. 2-year retention.

Session Documentation

  • Written aftercare documentation required.
  • Federal overlays: OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards, FDA ink safety.
