Age and Consent Rules

  • Tattoo: 18+ absolute, no parental consent pathway.
  • Piercing: consent allowed, either written consent or parent present.
  • Intimate piercing: 18+ only.
  • Texas: Minor tattoo cover-ups require parent present with affidavit and ID. Only obscene, gang-related, drug-related, or otherwise objectionable existing tattoos qualify.

Licensing Requirements

  • Practitioner licence required (Artist Registration (under studio license)).
  • TX: Studio license from DSHS, biennial renewal. Artists registered under studio. HSC §146.002, 25 TAC §229.405.

Sterilisation and Record-Keeping

  • Sterilization records required.
  • Retention period: 24 months.
  • TX: Permanent sterilization records required. Monthly spore testing by approved lab. 2-year retention.

  • Written aftercare documentation required.
