Age and Consent Rules

  • Tattoo: consent allowed, mode: dual pathway (written OR in-person).
  • Piercing: consent allowed (age 16+), mode: dual pathway (written OR in-person).
  • Intimate piercing: 18+ only.
  • NSW: Tattoo consent for minors can be provided either in writing or in person by a parent/guardian.
  • NSW: Tattoo consent for minors must specify procedure style/manner and body location.
  • NSW: Non-intimate piercing under 16 requires parent/guardian consent (in writing or in person). Consent must specify body part to be pierced.

Licensing Requirements

  • NSW requires tattooist licences issued by SLED (Security Licensing & Enforcement Directorate). Licences expire on 1/3/5yr terms. Premises registration through local council.
  • Practitioner licence required (Tattooist Licence Number (SLED)).

Sterilisation and Record-Keeping

  • Sterilisation records required.
  • Retention period: 12 months.
  • Weekly biological indicator (spore) testing mandatory. Records must include cycle type, date, duration, temperature, and operator.

Session Documentation

  • Written aftercare instructions required for tattoo procedures.
  • Ink batch number recording required.
